TMBMM #2 "Popularity, Spam and Success"

Hello everyone~, welcome to my second blog post in the Top Mistakes Beginning Mangaka Make. This time, I'm bringing up a topic I hadn't intended to bring up until later... But in light of some recent events which I'm not going to mention explicitly, I thought it might be worthwhile to get this out in the open. Again, I disclaim that these are only my opinions, and mine alone. I don't pretend to be an expert on any of these topics, and I hereby give you all the right to agree or disagree with ...

    Some vlog news

As I recently thought about, I wanted to make some kind of vlog, or comic-talk on youtube. I posted the first video today just to get started, but it's not going to be professional or anything. I'll talk about comics, MM - SJ, upcoming animes and comics, so on.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhop3_Eggr0   I'll look forward to make more!   - A

UPDATE, PLEASE READ 7/4/2012: I will only be selecting a few comics out of the many requests I'm getting so please do not get upset because I didn't choose yours, I simply cannot handle all of these requests.  A lot of artists on Manga Magazine ask others to review their work so they can improve on their blooming talent. This gave me an idea to start doing Manga/Comic reviews. This will give me the chance to help other artists improve and gain publicity while I get to read awesome underrated ...

    Assistants 2

so I just came back from a manga-ka's studio :D and now I will gloat as vaguely as possible.   I can't really tell any details but I begged the author to let me help out ( by whining about how I'm American and in America there would never be a chance for me to assist a professional manga author)  and he called me up (miraculously) and let me come over. Then I toned for 5.5 hrs. Somehow the experience struck me as fun. I think it was getting to work on pages that are so professionally construc...

Musings on Paneling 02: Stepping Down (or Up) Again, we have the number 2. *shifty eyes* Don't be immature. It's just a number, I tell you! *_* More manga thoughts. Hopefully is ADD friendly. I hope it is approachable and leaves every viewer feeling free to do with the general ideas what they like. This one method uses staggering panels and also bleeds to establish hierarchy of reading. Stepdowns (or stepups) can be great to lead the eye. Likewise, they can step-you-up. Like a transformer! Yo...

Musings on Paneling 01: The Big #2 No, not poop. The number! I've been asked about paneling before, but paneling is such an individual thing. It's a very broad topic to approach without getting stuffy and academic. A lot of the time I just notice things and draw randomly without ever putting words to what I'm doing. Luckily, Erin has been asking me things about stuff I never though to put words ot. So, I decided to do some laidback "tutorials" that simply present a principle and apply it. May...

Musings on Paneling 03: Hand Gestures More manga thoughts. Hopefully is ADD friendly. I hope it is approachable and leaves every viewer feeling free to do with the general ideas what they like. This one incorporates the previous two tutorials, zigzagging and stepping up/down in terms of panels. I guess I should note that this is a very flamboyant performance, wherein two people are engaging in passive-aggressive behavior. Some things, like pointing, are very aggressive, and might be troub...

    Trick R Treaters

Hey MM Users, So as you may have read from my profile update I'm FINALLY creating my own manga (with the help of my uber talented big sister Alyce13). You may have seen her work in my illistrations, but I'm finally putting my money where my mouth is and submitting my own work. I created a cast of characters from a bunch of doodles I did when I was 14, and I fell in love with them. Their look, their personalities, everything about them. They've stuck with me all these years and I feel it's abo...

    Comitia 100

(This journal is kind of an event report.) So today was Comitia 100, a pretty large original comic event that took place at Big Sight in Odaiba, Tokyo.  To cut down on costs I shared a booth with my friend, who recently joined MM...Amaitama! We also decided to spend money printing books out :D Here's a pic of our booth!   I wonder who that nerd is who is making a peace sign.....D;    There were SOOO many people....And since it's an original manga event it's hard to compete. We did not sell we...

Is it hard for a foreigner to do manga in Japan?

Disclaimer: I'm probably not all that qualified to tell you. But as a foreigner trying to do manga here, I guess I can think up an okay answer.  Think about it. Is it easy for a Japanese person in Japan to do manga? No, no, no....a thousand times no. So that brings us to the original question,  which has the added handicaps of Japanese not being your native language and you needing a visa to even reside in the country.  To make things worse, publishing companies are having a hell of a time th...
