    Heaven is A Lie
Heaven is A Lie Noldor Spellfury, a friend's character, not mine this time. My friend wanted this guy for a commission and its funny, I came up a lot of ideas for him; more than his initial request. >__>' Gosh I don't know what to do... Noldor wasn't completely developed when my friend made this request. After a handful of character development work on my part, I have like a dozen files of nothing but Noldor concepts. Noldor in his vampiric form. A speed painting because I had this image stuck in my head for weeks. also, while researching blood vessels i came across autopsy photos and icky hands from lack of blood circulation... Thank God I'll never be doctor

SeraphsFate I am an Art student in college for my senior year. I love reading comics and manga and I'd like to support some artists/authors here. My dream career is to be an Illustrator after I graduate college. I know I have a long way to go, but I'm pushing myself to get better. I, too, have a story to tell however, that will have to wait for a while until I create more pages/strips. ***Oh, um, its Tornado Season so, yeah, I'll have to skuttle to my hole alot of times... Wut is hitting my house???? O_O'''

What makes a good comic: Making worthwhile events in a story By request of Kenshinro7. Recommended to be read along with Choosing the Right Protagonist. This is kind of like a clarification post to the Protagonist one. Disclaimer: For either this post or the Protagonist post, I am not saying that one thing [protagonist or plot] is more important than the other but rather two forces which work together. If one fails, the other fails with it. It's up to you and your own style whether you think one is more important than another, but consider both aspects first. Please note that these blog posts of mine are a series of blog posts. Individually or as a whole, these posts were never intended to be the definite answer to making a good series. These are just tips I learned from reading manga and watching anime for many, many years and what I learned from studying literature. Like what I always say, it's good to question everything you see, so do not take what I say as a definite answer to making a good story but rather things that may help you make a story.   This does not apply to: One-shots [somewhat] Gags [to a limited degree]   What is meant by "event": Inidividual things that happen during the story's plot. The purpose of the events is to either give more information to the audience or advance the plot [usually from a stalemate]. But the definition can vary from person to person, so be sure to define what is meant by "event" yourself. My definition is only meant as a guideline. So why use "events?" If you follow the plot exactly from beginning to end, with nothing extra, you'd end up with either a very plain oneshot or a very dry story. It basically means that if your character's goal is to go from point A to point B, then the character will go from point A to point B with little to no explanation why or how the character went from point A to point B. Therefore, events provide a reason, essentially. It tells how the character reaches a goal and, in almost all cases, why the character is moving to the goal. It can also provide extra information about side characters, backstories, and etc. It can even be a subplot. It really has a broad range of uses and definitions. So how should events be properly used? Define a purpose for using the event. Why are you using this event? Because it "looks cool" is not a good reason. Is it to help the reader to get to know a character better or is it to advance the plot from a stalemate? Is it to give more depth to the story? These are the kinds of question you should ask yourself. Do not insert an event that has nothing to do with your story, because it will make it more confusing. It has to follow the central idea of your story. Make sure the purpose for inserting an event is legitimate. It's highly suggested that the event is used for a reason that works with the plot for some reason. For instance, if you try to give an indepth analysis on a character's history when the character has no substantial benefit for the story, then you're better off not doing so because this will make the story more complicated than it has to be. Be sure that the timing for the events is right. This one is probably the toughest of all. Timing is a very subjective thing and varies with each creator's style. But basically, it's how you spread the events out so that it doesn't seem too rushed or too slow. It's definitely dependent on your own style, so my only recommendation is to constantly re-read your comic or manga and think to yourself "if I do this, would it make the story too rushed or slow things down too much?" Also, keep in mind that the order of the events do matter. Think about the effects of putting one event in front of another and how that will affect your storytelling. Will it clear things up more or will it make things more confusing? Did you want to build up suspense or slowly reveal something to your audience? The protagonist plays a role in the events. The protagonist is the one who is perceiving the events and what's going on in it. What effect does the event have on the protagonist? Why is this event important to the protagonist? What does the protagonist think about the event? These are things you also need to think about, because the story is viewed from the protagonist's eyes. It's inevidable that the protagonist has something to do with the events. Example of a series that uses events well: Chihayafuru by Suetsugu Yuki      Suetsugu Yuki does a very good job using events to add depth to the story, develop the characters, and, at the same time, advance the plot. She focuses on Chihaya's backstory first by putting her into competitions that make her question her purpose of playing karuta. Then, she throws other people into the mix by developing the side characters. This way, it builds a sort of teamwork effect on the story. Chihayafuru's central idea is friendship and teamwork; simply developing the Chihaya, the protagonist, would make the story seem more like a one person show rather than a display of teamwork. Teamwork and friendship is what gives Chihaya a purpose to play karuta, which is the basis of the manga. I'm sorry this sounds extremely general and rushed. I wanted to go to indepth analysises of the different types of plot devices [foiling, foreshadowing, mono no aware, backstory, etc.] that can be used for these "plot events," but I guess things don't work this way and I apologize for getting ahead of myself and deciding to do that. I'd also like to apologize for the fact that all this caused more confusion than it has with clarification, so I guess I'll stop here. Cheerios! β-gal

    AERO
AERO Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Aero, and I'm a 19-year-old aspiring manga artist. My dream is to become a successful mangaka in Japan (which is like winning the lottery, I know). I like listening to Japanese punk rock while I draw. I like both shonen and seinen manga, but my all time favorite manga is Full Metal Alchemist by Arakawa Hiromu. I like stories like FMA that demonstrate the strength and fragility of the human condition, and that's something I'd like to explore in the manga I create. I'm strictly a traditional artist because I'm just too dumb to use a computer (seriously though, I admire you digital artists, you guys are incredible). My materials are Tachikawa pen nibs, Sumi ink, Holbein gouache (usually for fixing coloring mistakes) and Copic markers. Please don't steal my art or character designs. I've worked hard to get where I am today, and I'm sure you guys are working hard too. If you want to talk to me about drawing techniques or just anything in general though, I'm completely open! :) I know what it feels like to be shy and awkward so I'll do everything I can to make you feel comfortable haha.
