Sounding Off On Sound Effects.
Sounding Off On Sound Effects For my webcomic series FaLLEN, I draw the comic in both English and Japanese, and both languages have their advantages and disadvantages. What I enjoy about English is being able to play with wording and using slang, and I think English can be a really fun, loose language for writing longer, poetic descriptions. In Japanese, over-complicating the language isn't always a good idea, but the language is able to use fewer words to get more across. But for me, the biggest advantage Japanese has over English is their extensive use of the mighty onomatopoeia. Some examples are "kurukuru" for spinning, "nikoniko" for smiling, and "jiii" for staring at something. In manga, these are common sound effects, but the English language doesn't have sounds for these actions. In manga-styled comics, artists tend to use the verb as the sound; "spin", "smile", and "stare". It's not always pretty, but sometimes that's all we've got. When I was at manga school in Tokyo, I had a class specifically for effects, and it was one of my hardest classes. Our professor asked us to draw various scenes that needed sound effects, and I was stumped. He came up to me and asked me to just use the sounds we have in English. He said, "For example, in Japanese thunder makes the sound 'gorogorogoro' (which is a sort of rolling sound). What does thunder sound like in English?" He was surprised to find out that in English we would just say "crash", but that's not really the sound it makes. We don't have ways to express many sounds, so I had to learn Japanese onomatopoeia in order to make manga in Japan. But what are English-language artists supposed to do when making their manga-influenced pages? Some artists, especially on sites like MangaMagazine.net, have decided to use Japanese sound effects for their English comics, with reasons ranging from "It looks cool!" to "It looks more Japanese", and of course artists want to take advantage of Japanese's great usage of sound effects. Unfortunately, there are problems with doing this; most of your readers don't read Japanese, and your scene may not have the impact on them you were hoping for. Another problem is that a lot of authors don't actually read or speak Japanese themselves, and the sound effects they use are often incorrect. This can be pretty jarring for those of us who actually can read the language, and it's a little distracting to mix languages. John : Oh man! It's a bomb! Julie : Quick, get behind that door! バッタン! ドカーン!! John : That was close! ハー ハー Julie : What did you say, John? I don't speak Japanese. John : へっ Seriously? ニヤ Julie : Goddammit, John, I'm really sick of this. John : GOMEN NE! (汗) Julie : Go to hell. Do your readers a favor and try to restrict yourself to one language per page, even if it isn't always easy. For two years I worked translating manga professionally. Without a doubt, the hardest part of translating is having to do sound effects-- this is probably the reason publishers like TokyoPop just left them in for their English language publications ("authentic manga experience" my ass… they were lazy). I sometimes had to check other translators' works, and was surprised to find how many people would cheat with sound effects. I remember making a fuss about one guy who translated the sounds of birds in the morning as "birds chirping"! We actually have a sound effect for that-- "tweet tweet", or "chirp chirp", or even variations like "twee" and "twit twit". There was no excuse! But sometimes it really does get tough coming up with translations, so I came up with a few tricks for dealing with sound effects that can't be translated. One thing I did was take the verb and cut out the vowels, and change "c" to "k". If a character was scratching their head, instead of "scratch" I'd type "skrtch skrtch". In a funny font, it works as a non-distracting sound effect. Sometimes I would double a consonant to replace the vowel, like "whrrl" instead of "whirl". For trembling I often take "shake" and break it down to "shk". "Shk shk shk" is less distracting than "shake shake shake" and, to me at least, makes the movement less broad than if I used "shake", which I might use instead for a character shaking someone's hand. Get creative! Sometimes it is absolutely okay to just use a word as a sound effect. Single-syllable verbs like "glare", "smile", "blink" and such can be effective enough since there are no sounds coming from these simple actions. But there are some single-syllable words that are frequently used in webcomics that have better counterparts; "run" and "jump" are frequently used as sound effects, but they are pretty dull! What type of run or jump is it? If it's a little jump, maybe "hop" or even "boing" would be better substitutions, whereas a larger action, like leaping from one rooftop to another, could use a made-up word, like "shooomp". The more "o"s used, the more you are drawing out the action. For sprinting, an exciting word like "dash" might be better than "run" because it is a bit more descriptive in what sort of run is taking place. "Zip!" is good for characters moving a short distance so quickly they are just a blur! If a character is trotting along for a morning run, maybe just have their breathing for the sound ("huff huff", or even "hff hff"), or use the sounds of the character's feet hitting the ground. Depending on the footwear and surface, it could be "ta ta", "clop clop", or even "stomp stomp" if they are as big as a T-Rex. Using a sound twice shows repetitive movement a little better than if you just said "stomp", which would imply someone only smashed their foot down once. Sound effects are sounds written in letters, but they shouldn't always be words, unless you really want to emphasize the action. If a person stands up, a simple "ta…" might suffice. Writing "Stand!" is a bit much and a little distracting, especially if the character isn't making any grand gestures. But usually, you shouldn't even use a sound effect for this kind of action unless you want to draw attention to something. You especially don't want to use two words-- don't use phrases like "get up"! That's not a sound effect! If a character falls, instead of "fall" you could use "fwump". One of the worst sound effects I've ever seen in a webcomic was "dissolve away" for when pixie dust floated into the air. "Shoosh" or "shhh" or anything else would have been so much better! Keep it simple-- if there is a clear action, don't explain the action! That's what the art is for! Sound effects are a bit of a misnomer in that they aren't sounds, since comics are a visual medium, but they can be used to stress motion or emphasize an action. You can't animate a person taking a deep breath and releasing air, but you can indicate they've sighed with a sound effect. A mushroom cloud without a great big KA-BOOM!! is pretty dull. Think about when a sound effect is really necessary and what it is you want to convey. Consider placement, font, and whether or not you want to play with the font to make it look like it's arched, waving, or bulging. Even with the right sound effect, bad typography can make for a dull panel. So don't be afraid to play around with sound effects, and most importantly… DON'T BE LAZY! Sound effects are just as much a part of the comic as the characters and dialogue! For examples of how I use sound effects, check out my comic FaLLEN here on MangaMagazine.net! If you need help coming up with sound effects, you will probably want to bookmark this onomatopoeia online dictionary: http://www.writtensound.com/index.php -

Soulcalibur - Tira vs Talim.
Soulcalibur - Tira vs Talim More old art-- did this a year ago for an art book of some of my favorite anime and game girls. Huge SC fan up until V, which was such a disappointment for someone who likes single-player mode games, AND especially for someone who loves Talim. But my other favorite girl, Tira, was still in the game and had an amazing new costume. So I drew her in her new costume and Talim in her IV costume as if she was a little older, like maybe this took place between IV and V or something. I'd really like to draw these two again. -

The Misu Sisters.
The Misu Sisters More old art! My favorite pic of 2012 was this pinup I did of the Misu sisters from Bakuretsu Hunter (Sorcerer Hunters), Tira and Chocolat. I remember in high school I used to idolize Tira because she was a mega babe but wore thick glasses and a big red frock and always hid her sexiness until she went into attack mode. I thought it would be cool if I could do that... without getting arrested for indecent exposure. Her sister Chocolat (or Chocolate) was also pretty awesome. These are their alternate outfits from the bonus manga that was released later on, and it was kind of the worst thing ever. But I love these costumes, and in that book they were in their twenties, so that's what I chose to draw. -

Sitting.
Sitting Original on deviantART Another thing from last year xD It's two of my characters from another story of mine, G&M ~Märchen~. It used to be a webcomic but starting two comics at the same time in college = AHAHAHAHAHAHA NO. I love Legendary Beings Ara & Celi more, so this one sacrificed itself for my sanity *sniff* and went to the 'defeat' list. But for now I usually work on the thumbnails on-and-off between webcomic breaks and when I'm bored at places, because I do want to release it onto the world one day again. With this pic I just wanted to try drawing difficult poses (imho), since I'm aiming for this comic to have a slightly different feel and style to it :B Here's the DA gallery, if you want to look at more of the art. It's in the sci-fi genre :) -

Arma, The Iron Maiden.
Arma, The Iron Maiden Did this last summer for an art book, but I spent too long on the face before the deadline got close, and I had to speed through the body (so it and the sword suck, haha). This is why I don't like to do the painterly style... it just takes me too long. But I liked her face, so I used it for my banners on my website. This, by the way, is Arma, the main character of my series FaLLEN here on MM. I thought I'd celebrate her finding her name in the newest page by adding some illustrations of her. -

Half 'N Half : Character Designs.
Half 'N Half : Character Designs Old art! Back in 2010 I did a one-shot comic about "halfies", characters who were half-something and wanted to become "whole". For example, Kiva on the left was half-human half-beastman (the twist in the story, I think, was that he was actually half-werewolf...) and the girl on the right, Hilde, was half-dwarf half-human. She wanted to be full-human and Kiva wanted to be full-beastman, but along the way he learned a greater sense of humanity, thanks to his pet Steve. One reason I never posted the full story is because Up by Pixar came out sometime after I had finished this and I was mortified to see some similar elements (particularly with the bird creature subplot), and that's why I never got around to showing it to many people. Now that I have some more experience in manga-making, I would really like to go back and rework the story and make an even better one-shot. Editors LOVED Hilde but didn't like Kiva, so I'd like to redesign him and fix his character a bit. -

Half 'N Half : Sample 1 A page from a one-shot I did in 2010. It's nice to go back and see the improvement! I think I have better sense when it comes to sound effects, layout, and comic fonts now. What they are saying: BOSS: Hey! Kiva!! BOSS: Take this to the table over there. KIVA: Wai-- I'm a little busy right now! KIVA: You can see my hands are full... KIVA: ...so just shut up already, geez! KIVA: (I wanna go fishing when work's over...) MAN: Hey you, the halfling! Get over here! -

Half 'N Half : Sample 2 Another page from a 2010 one-shot. I think I've improved! I would really like to go back and rework this comic someday, though. Fantasy comics are so much fun! Not sure if anyone would want to read it, but I think it would be a blast. Dialogue: HILDE: Interesting story, isn't....? KIVA: HAHAHA! Cure a Halfling? Are you mental? The only person to believe a fairytale like that is a dumb kid like you! HILDE: I am not a child. Like you I am half-human.... and I am half-dwarf. My name is Hildegard Klein. HILDE: Whether you believe it or not, that's up to you, but... HILDE: I believe it, and I'm risking everything to find the legendary Draget. (Now then...) KIVA: Now, hold on there, Hilde! Can you really become "whole"? HILDE: (Hilde?) I must continue my journey now. KIVA: Okay, I'll go too! HILDE: I only told you the story because I took pity on you, but I prefer to go alone. -

Super Anime Girls.
Super Anime Girls Old 2012 art. This is the cover I did for the artbook Firecel and I sold at Comic Market 82 (and if anyone wants a copy, let me know!). It's 24 pages front to back, full color, and features some of our favorite girls of anime (and game, and... and whatever we felt like like, actually). So who made the cut? Well, you can tell from the cover, hopefully, since every series featured has one girl on the cover (as well as in the book). > - Mari from the Evangelion movies - Menace from Queen's Blade (in her bikini top from the PSP games) - Tsumugi from K-ON!! - Sailor Iron Mouse from Sailor Moon - Chinatsu from Yuru Yuri - Tira from Soulcalibur V - Tira from Bakuretsu Hunter Astute readers may notice the girl in the middle is actually from my webcomic FaLLEN. Check it out if you haven't already, it's on this site :D -
