@thread: hmm for me, it'd be fushigi yuugi by yuu watase. I know, the story's kind of cheesy and all, but after <s>obsessing</s>watching it when I was younger, I got fascinated and wanted to create my own manga/anime someday, too!
other inspirations are Evangelion (my absolute favorite! psychotic characters are the best~), Escaflowne, Yamato Nadeshiko, and maybe Kimi ni Todoke.

for me, I like it when a manga (or any story, I suppose xD) begins with a really intriguing scene or line. that's what gets me hooked on reading them.
