Alex Velkade, full name, Alexandra Velkade, is always mistaken for a guy. Bored with life, she fills her time with learning whatever she could get her hands on. Her parents and school officials are not aware of her smartness, except for her test scores, so she does not skip grades. It doesn't matter to her, but she does not socialize with people, so everyone in her school thinks that she's weird, and shun her, although that doesn't bother her at all. She believes that reality sucks, and enjoys reading and playing games, because they are the only worlds that allow her to get away from reality. One day she tries out a new game that just came out called "Phantasy Live."

Suddenly, reality becomes a game.

In the game Phantasy Live, Vincent finds out how the game is related to wandering souls in reality. Shocked, he freaks out and is suddenly being pursued by a classmate who feels like he doesn't understand her life in reality. Evan helps out and rids Vincent of his pursuer. Little did he know that people who sold their souls in Phantasy Live no longer are connected to reality.

Vincent lets Alex into what he does - catching souls. Hungry, they head down the the kitchen, but Alex's sister, Maria, barges in at the wrong moment. Receiving an apology and a threat from Maria, Vincent suddenly rushes out of the house because of a phone call, Vincent saying that "he won't die." The next day, Alex brings Vincent to the game, Fantasy Live, suggesting that the main problem resided within the game. Vincent finds out that players of the game sell their soul in order to escape reality and live in the game forever. While he's gone, Alex asks Evan if he'll sell his soul to Fantasy Live.

Vincent is set out to find more about Alex. Yet he's always there at the wrong time and believes that Alex is one strange guy. The girl Alex passed on the way home finds him the next day and suddenly attacks him. Vincent appears before Alex can defend herself and fight back and does something that knocks the girl out. Bewildered, Alex asks what Vincent is.

Alexandra Velkade hates reality, and plays a game called "Phantasy Live." Unlike your other typical games, this one does not require a controller. Instead, you yourself are inside the game. In this game, Alex meets a conceited player, thinking that level is what matters. Although in here, skill is what matters most, not level. He gets a little "surprise" though, by shoving Alex, trying to get into a fight. Alex though, is forced to log off because of the time limit she has paid for at the front desk, and decides to come back again. On the way home though, Vincent DiWills, the new kid, sees her pass a girl. Alex senses something wrong with her, and is troubled by what she is.
