ComicVeggies: Exercise #01 Critique

The first round of ComicVeggies has ended! Thanks to everyone who participated and created such awesome entries!

I did notice that a lot of the participants had trouble with the profile view and making it consistent betwixt the other two angles. I have to wonder if part of that was my fault for collapsing the skull a bit in the template. The template was meant to be used more for measuring the placement of the features between faces rather than an accurate representation of a skull. For that, I apologize. We’ll remedy this in another exercise on the head.

In this entry by Ennun, we have a very distinctive character with very fine linework. From the frontal view, the character looks to be a strong-willed man of about 20 years with wide-set eyes and a strong jaw. It’s drawn very well, but when it’s compared to the 3/4 view, the character feels like two separate characters, or at least two different ages.

A lot of rounding went on in the cheeks of the 3/4 view, and the mouth lowered itself closer to the chin, making the character feel younger. This can be fixed by using sharper lines with the cheeks, widening the mouth and moving it more directly under the nose, and squaring up the jawline.

The profile is also very well drawn, but this is where I noticed a lot of people collapsing the skull. judging by the positioning of the hair on the original drawing, the back of the head is flattened. I realize that on my original template, I did the same thing. It’s a really tough thing to watch out for! D:

That’s all for this exercise, everybody! The critiqued entry was chosen at random, but if you would like your entry to be red-lined and critiqued, please let us know and we shall do so.

Thanks again to everyone who made this first exercise so successful! Make sure to check out everyone’s exercises below.

In the next week or so, we’ll be starting exercise #2! Just a heads-up: It’s all about hands!

  1. I would love it if you would critique mine. >.<; I did get a comment from Studio Kawaii, but really the more opinions the better. (it's the same as the name listed here; I did three characters.) Sorry they're only sketches though; I didn't want to miss the deadline. TT_TT;
